Institute for a dynamic, hands-on learning experience designed for professionals in
afterschool and summer programs. This event is relevant for staff of all levels
working directly or indirectly with youth aged PreK-6th grade.
Day 1: Behavior 101 & Foundational Practices with topics including:
Building strong relationships as a foundation for behavior support
Creating environments that work
Using activities and motivation to engage youth
Designing schedules that support success
Exploring how YOU fit into a successful team that supports youth development
and educator wellness (5 Hours Registry Credit)
Day 2: Team-Based Strategies & System Support with topics including:
Understanding the escalation cycle and de-escalation strategies
Strengthening communication with families
Reinforcing team roles and collaboration
Prioritizing mental wellness for educators
Embedding relationship-building across programs
Designing program structures that support both staff and youth

Creating a Culture of Care
August 20, 2025 at 10 am, 2 hours, CKC HSN, Set ONE
Participants will understand the stress response and identify 4 realms of adversity that can become toxic. The psychological and behavioral impact of adversity and trauma will be described and participants with apply those concepts to interpret the behavior of students they serve. Participants understand the elements of a Culture of Care and identify them in their work setting.
The Arousal Continuum and Escalation Cycle

Participants will explore how fear impacts brain function and distinguish between two arousal modes. They will learn the phases of the escalation cycle and identify adult strategies to prevent, manage, and support recovery from student escalations, promoting a more responsive and supportive learning environment.
Adult Regulation and Self Care
August 21, 2025 at 9am, 1 hour, CKC HSN, Set ONE
Participants will understand how their state of regulation affects the state of regulation of their students. Participants will recognize strategies for regulation, in the moment, and discover which could work best for them. Self-Care strategies will be explored, and participants will begin organizing strategies for their personal plan.
Regulating Routines, Rituals and Ecology
August 21, 2025 at 10am, 2 hours, CKC LEC, Set TWO (pending)
Participants will identify key aspects of a “Culture of Care” and student resilience. They will examine effective routines and environments that support regulation, explore strategies to promote skill development, and engage in collaborative discussions to apply these practices in their own classrooms, fostering supportive and responsive learning spaces.
One or two more sessions will be added as we continue to develop the program.
