Exploring Diversity Through Children's Literature

This session will discuss the need for cultural inclusiveness and present children's literature that introduces diversity into the classroom.

Participants will explore how to create environments that welcome young learners from any background and what an important role children’s books can play in this effort. As Oregon schools become increasingly diverse, classrooms and curriculum for young children must meet the needs of all students.

Trainer: Dr. Erin Wilder has a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Seattle University. She teaches literacy courses in the ECD and Elem. Ed. programs at SOU, all grounded in theories of anti-bias curriculum and multicultural education. She has taught kindergarten and first grade and enjoys working with teachers on developing a sense of identity through reflective teaching practices. She has two toddlers who help her put theory into practice.
