Celebrating Cultural Diversity through the Holidays and Children's Literature

This workshop will examine the basis of anti-racist education through exploring holidays from around the world. Holidays are a great way to teach children about various cultures through their rich traditions and celebrations and are a first step in creating an inclusive classroom environment. Participants will have the opportunity to explore children’s literature, hands on activities, and share ideas about how they would like to integrate holidays into the classroom.

Trainer: Dr. Erin Wilder has a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Seattle University.  She teaches literacy courses in the Early Childhood Development and Elementary Education programs at Southern Oregon University, all grounded in the theories of anti-bias curriculum and multicultural education. She has taught kindergarten and first grade and enjoys working with teachers on developing a sense of identity as teachers and guiding them through reflective teaching practices. Dr. Wilder has two toddlers who help her put theory into practice and continue to build on her understanding of the need for effective parent/school/community partnerships.
