Materials as Thinking Tools
Using Loose Parts with Young Children as an Inclusive and Responsive Approach to Knowledge Building

Loose parts and open-ended materials are items children can move, manipulate, combine, and transform. When children play with loose parts, they bring their authentic selves – their lives, languages, interests, and motivations – to the experiences. This session explores the use of loose parts and open-ended materials as a developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive approach to working with young children.
