Observation and Assessment
Authentically Supporting the Whole Child

In our work with children, we seek to deeply understand each child’s unfolding journey, striving to meet their unique needs with care and intention. This process may include teacher observations, family connections, interactions through play, and reflective discussions with other teachers. Supporting the whole child in their unfolding and becoming requires the teacher to embody a stance that is both attentive and authentic, thus creating the space for each child to become who they are meant to be. This unfurling can only emerge within each child in caring and positive relationships. The teacher's awareness and attentiveness cultivate their individual inner capacity to see, encounter, and reflect the deeper meaning behind the child's unique being, their actions, and even inner thoughts and emotions. This approach to holistic observation and assessment fosters the joy of discovery within the teacher and invites the adults to uncover their own beliefs and images about children and childhood and its impact on how and what we observe and assess. In this workshop, participants will engage in child studies and stories, hands-on activities and guided observations to deepen
their understanding of holistic approach to assessment.
