First Connections: Protective Urges

Caregivers and families share intense feelings about caring for infants. We instinctively strive to protect the young. While these “protective urges” can lead to respectful and responsive partnerships with families, they can also interfere with the relationship. Caregivers can work to help parents with their anxieties while dealing with their own feelings.
