Ages and Stages

The ASQ inventory is a developmental assessment tool that measures children’s development in five domains (communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social) and asks caregivers questions about activities that children learn to do as they develop (for example, sitting on their own, saying words, or feeding themselves with a spoon). Results from the ASQ inventory can be used to help teachers measure a child’s developmental progress and determine what skills a child is capable of doing, as well as what skills they might be ready to learn. Knowing what children are ready to learn helps teachers to provide learning opportunities and activities that are developmentally appropriate. In addition, results from the ASQ inventory can also be used to compare a child’s development to other children who are the same age. Measuring and comparing children’s development helps teachers to know when children might need extra help or opportunities to develop age appropriate skills.
