Making It Meaningful: Observing Children with a Sense of Purpose
Young children are learning constantly as they play, explore and interact with people and the world around them. Observing these activities thoughtfully can guide us towards more meaningful teaching.
In this session we will explore how observing children with intention and purpose helps us
• Recognize and build on children’s interests, strengths and challenges
• Offer appropriate levels of guidance and support
• Adjust our teaching strategies and environments when children get “stuck”
• Keep children positively engaged
We’ll also look at specific strategies for
• Focusing our observations
• Objectively documenting children’s experiences and learning
• Using our observations to individualize learning and support classroom planning
