Early Literacy is One of the Foundations of a Healthy Society

Ensuring that all children receive high-quality literacy instruction and learn to read in culturally affirming environments
is a key indicator of lifelong success. Failing to do so can have devastating personal and societal consequences. Low
literacy rates are linked to higher poverty rates, lower educational attainment, and increased likelihood of incarceration.
In this session, we will learn about research-based literacy instruction that is developmentally appropriate and culturally
affirming in order to have a literate community.
