Community Dialogue Workshop: Navigating Tough Conversations - Session 3

Severe polarization distorts our view of our fellow community members. Interactions with people with different perspectives on political issues or other controversial topics are largely confined to shouting matches over social media, or are avoided altogether. For those who seek mutual understanding, it can be hard to find an opportunity; and if we have the opportunity, we lack the skills to keep the conversation productive.
Through dialogue, we aim to dismantle our stereotypes of those who do not hold our opinions, and arrive at a deeper understanding of the complex landscape of a different world view. In this very interactive workshop, we will explore our cognitive and emotional barriers to meaningfully engaging with people who disagree with us. Participants will practice skills for overcoming these barriers, inviting others to a less combative approach, and sticking with it when things get heated. The workshop will be held over Zoom over the course of 3 weeks. The three sessions build on each other, so please plan to attend all three.
