Living Off The Land – Discovering Native Ways of Knowing and Sensitivity in the Classroom

Indigenous knowledge and Western science can find a balance through sensitivity and understanding. This workshop will introduce ways of explaining various tribal cultures of the Columbia River Plateau and their understanding of how art, science, and traditional ways of living are interwoven. This workshop wills stress sensitivity while providing numerous activities such as basket weaving for young children, cordage making, and discovering the life ways of local tribes who follow the seasonal round.

Participants will know the differences between three Columbia River Plateau tribes
Participants will know three activities to do in the classroom with young children that share the life ways of Plateau tribes.
Participants will have a deeper understanding of how to share information about native peoples while being sensitive to a different culture.
